A "born again" runner from Prees is set to take on one of the world's best-known races in aid of a hospital.

Lorraine Gillan, 64, will run the London Marathon next month to raise funds for the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen.

"The RJAH not only serves the local community in the area but also is a centre of excellence in orthopaedic treatment, research and training both nationally and internationally.," she said.

"I myself have been a patient at the hospital which inspired me to take up running again.

Lorraine, who describes herself as a "born again runner", told how she was a keen runner in her 30s – completing several marathons, including London twice – but a bad leg fracture stopper her doing serious training for a long time.

"I kept up jogging for fun and I also do dog agility training and have started doing canicross, which is trail running and racing with dogs. I have five dogs and the two youngest ones do the running and dog agility," she added.

"My best running buddies who are the dogs, are helping me get through the long training runs. I’m am slower than I was in my 30s but my over 60s times are improving with every half marathon I do and I am currently running up to 16 miles in training which will be up to 20 miles soon."

Lorraine added that she suffered for many years with anxiety and depression issues, and that running and doing the dog sports helps me mix with like-minded people to manage the conditions.

"Knowing I am doing it for a good cause gives me a sense of purpose, I’m also keen to show that you are never too old to take up old hobbies and be active for physical and mental wellbeing," she added.

Lorraine has also organised a Ceilidh Social night at Prees Village Hall on March 15, which music by Tern Valley Tinkers to help with my fundraising for the hospital.

Tickets are available from Lorraine on 07704171132 or from Jackies Stores Prees.
