AN ELLESMERE man is spreading the world about helping the environment around Europe.

Rob McBride – affectionately known as the Tree Hunter – is this week set to complete a tour of 11 countries to promote the European Tree of the Year competition, organised by the Environmental Partnership Association.

Speaking from Spain, where he is completing the final visit of his tour, Mr McBride hailed the welcome he has received – particularly in Slovakia, where around 300 people turned out to greet him.

Mr McBride, 60, who has been in the volunteer role for 15 years, has appeared on such television shows as Countryfile.

During his visits, Mr McBride has judged art competitions and given talks about environmental issues, including climate change.

He described the tour as "very tiring" but also "very rewarding".

The European Tree of the Year competition boasts 15 entries from across the continent, with the UK entry being Nellie's Tree in Leeds.

An online vote to decide the winner closes on Thursday (February 28). Voters are asked to select two trees.

The results will be announced at an award ceremony in Brussels on March 19.

Winners of the art competitions will also attend.
