A BROWNIE group showed their community spirit by raising funds for a charity that helps deaf people.

Second Ellesmere Brownies earned their Charities Badge with a visit from Hearing Dogs for the Deaf.

The youngsters learned to say their names in sign language and writing thank you cards.

They also boosted the charity’s coffers by holding a sponsored silence, which raised £325.50 and helped spread awareness of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf among their friends and family.

Hearing Dogs for the Deaf was founded in 1982 and since then has more than 900 partnerships across the UK.

The charity train dogs to alert deaf people to sounds they would otherwise miss – simple sounds that many people take for granted such as the doorbell, alarm clock and even danger signals like fire alarms.

But a hearing dog can give a deaf person a newfound sense of independence and confidence now they have a loyal companion and a true friend by their side.
