Grants to clubs and societies in Wem have been confirmed after the town council's budget was passed last week.

A number of clubs were granted the highest amount given of £500, including Wem Amateur Dramatic & Operatic Society, Wem Carnival Committee, Wem Cricket Club, Wem Jubilee Band, North Shropshire Wheelers, Wem Tennis Club and Wem Bowling Club.

Wem Albion Bowling Club and Vehicles of Interest both received £400 while there was £200 each for Wem Army Cadet Force League, the Baptist Holiday Bible Club and the 1st Wem Girl Guiding.

The Welcome to Wem Community Group was awarded £100.

Meanwhile, Wem Town Council has set maximum precept of £316, 462, which is an increase of three per cent on a band D property.

It has also confirm the budgeted contributions it will make to larger groups running services and/or facilities in Wem.

The Christmas Lights and Festival Committee received £3,000 while the Friends of Whitchurch Road Cemetery received £2,000; We Millennium Green was awarded £1,700; Wem Sports and Social Association received £18,000 and Wem Youth Centre received £2,000.

However the largest award was for Wem Swimming & Lifestyle Centre, which received £58,000.

Other standout figures from the confirmed budget include £100,356 for staffing costs and £1,075 for the councillors' expenses budget.
