A CHOIR is set to celebrate a landmark anniversary with a concert in Bangor-on-Dee.

Brymbo Male Choir will perform a St David's Day grand concert at St Dunawd's Church as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.

The concert will feature traditional and modern choral music in Welsh and English, with soloists including harpist Seren Haf Jones, who is studying for her master’s degree in music at Bangor University, and mezzo soprano Becky Roberts, who is a performing arts teacher.

Brymbo Male Choir has enjoyed numerous incarnations, the present group originating in 1959 at the now-closed Brymbo Steel works that supported the choir in various ways and under different names over the years.

A spokesman said: "The site was closed in September 1990 despite being profitable, producing high quality steel and operating unique quality control systems but the choir continued independently to become the group it is today.

"Many choristers have served continuously for over forty years and were under the baton of Glyn Hughes until 2011. Glyn was awarded an MBE for music and charity work and maintains contact with the choir to this day.

The current musical director, Shirley Newman, continues Glyn’s tradition with the assistance of her deputy Sian Meirian."

"Tickets for the St David's Day grand concert are £8 and are available at http://www.brymbomalechoir.co.uk/ or by phoning Peter Furber on 01978 780 243.

Entrance will be by ticket only.
