A Cheshire councillor says he wants to continue working with Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) for improvements to make the A41 a safer road.

Councillor Chris Whitehurst, who represents Malpas, was speaking after the death of a 38-year-old Wirral man on January 9 which is the latest in a number of fatalities on the stretch between Whitchurch and the Broxton roundabout.

Cllr Whitehurst says he believes a lot of the incidents which occur on the A41 come down to the volume of traffic driving down the two-lane lane road and hopes to find ways to address it.

"The road is not great – if you think about the roads going out south of Cheshire, we've got the M6 which is always full of congestion all of the time," he said.

"We also have the A483 which is between Chester then down to Oswestry and Shrewsbury with the A5 and then we have the A41.

"This is not a good road for overtaking and is full of lorry traffic all of the time too.

"I don't think the speeds driven are that high but it's more the drivers cannot get past the lorries which is frustrating for them.

"Then people can't wait out of frustration – that's, in my view, a product of modern life.

"I have lobbied CWAC many times if there is another transport forum that any changes made to the A41 take into consideration the volume of traffic.

It's about having reasoned argument and working with the council. It's about the details to help workout the best for Malpas with CWAC and Malpas Parish Council.

"This is aiming to help the congestion. But it's also down to the individual driver at the end of the day."

Meanwhile, the family of the Wirral man who died in the collision in Edge, Malpas, have paid tribute to him.

Phillip Edwards, 38, died at the scene and is family are being supported by specialist officers.

His family said: "It is with great sadness that Phillip Edwards passed away on Wednesday following a road traffic collision.

"Phill was a much-loved husband, son, dad, brother and uncle and this tragic event will leave a huge hole in our lives. We ask that our privacy is respected at this difficult time."

Anyone who witnessed the collision should contact Cheshire Police on 101 or via www.cheshire.police.uk/contact/general-enquiries/ by quoting IML 290087.
