An APPEAL against the decision to refuse planning for an Aldi foodstore will be heard from Monday onwards.

Planning permission was refused 12 months ago by Shropshire County Council after residents, Whitchurch Town Council and the town’s Lidl store, all objected to the new store, which was to be built in Wrexham Road and next to the A41.

The appeal will be on Tuesday, January 22 at 10am, in the Oswestry Room at Shropshire Council’s Shirehall base.

The retail giants have amended elements of their original proposals, including withdrawing the offer of a ‘shopper bus’, using a smaller taxi service.

Aldi have collated evidence from experts as to why the original decision should be overturned, with documents put forward to Shropshire Council’s North Shropshire Planning Committee.

Aldi’s original plans received objections from residents in Wrexham Road who did not want added traffic pressures; Whitchurch Town Council on the ground that it would have a detrimental effect on businesses in town, while business owners also objected on the same grounds.

However, there was some support from residents in Whitchurch while the town council added it would support an Aldi at a different location.
