The Christmas season was in full swing at Whixall Community Centre last week as Father Christmas made a special appearance.

Monday, December 17, saw the second annual Whixall community Christmas event, a fundraiser held by members of the Social Centre committee.

Guests were treated to mulled wine and mince pies, while activities on offer were a children’s disco, and they were able to ‘write a letter to Santa’, among others.

Visitors were able to browse craft stalls of local produce while they awaited the arrival of Santa and his sleigh, courtesy of Wem and District Rotary club.

The event was also attended by members of St Mary’s Church, and Barrie and Sam Walter of Whixall who are both volunteers for Shropshire ,Staffordshire and Cheshire blood bikers.

Event organiser Carole Newey James was delighted with how the night went.

She said: "More than £500 was raised on the evening, and will go towards the upkeep of the Social Centre, and help provide training for our defibrillator, which is due to be installed in the new year.

"It was lovely to see members from all parts of our community join together at Christmas.

"As a child growing up in the village, the Social Centre was always a hive of activity, and this is something I shall continue, something that my own children can enjoy.

"Please keep an eye on social media and local notices for events planned for next year, we have some new fundraisers to run alongside our annual events.

"May I also take this opportunity to thank all of the local businesses that supported us, with their generous donations of raffle prizes – we had some stunners this year."
