January will truly be a ‘walking’ month for Malpas Field Club.

The first event in the programme for 2019 is the annual New Year’s Ramble, led by David Hayns on Sunday January 6, starting from the Jubilee Hall in Malpas High Street at 1.30pm.

This will be a walk lasting about three-and-a-quarter miles, taking in Sunnyside, Carding Fields and Oldcastle.

Everyone is welcome including well-behaved children, and dogs, who must be kept on leads throughout the walk. Please wear stout footwear for what could be a muddy route in places.

The walk is open to anyone wanting to dust off the post-Christmas cobwebs before returning to work.

Three days later, the club will hold its first indoor meeting of the year on Wednesday, January 9 at 7.45pm at Malpas High Street Church.

The theme remains for those fleet of foot and who enjoy the great outdoors as the appropriately named Philip Walker will give an illustrated presentation on ‘A walk through Whitchurch 100 years ago’.

Philip’s talk will use old photographs of Malpas’ nearest neighbour blended with present-day views of the same scenes, to ‘re-create’ Whitchurch around 1911.

For a copy of the current programme to be sent by post or email, or for further information about the Field Club, please contact David, in his role as secretary of the club on 01948 860486 or by email on davidhayns.123@btinternet.com

n Meanwhile, after the community-wide efforts of the village to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the end of the First World War, residents can now officially purchase a souvenir for keeps.

The Malpas 100 Years On official souvenir film, showing highlights of the commemoration activities in Malpas, is on sale at £10 each, with proceeds towards the group. For details contact Angela Witter on 07783 679688 or email enquiries@witteronmarketing.co.uk
