A PENSIONER is angry at how a supermarket dealt with her complaint about a fall that left her with a broken shoulder.

June Ratcliffe, 77, believes she slipped on sauce in the aisle and “went flying” at Tesco in Whitchurch.

Mrs Ratcliffe, of Edgley Road in Whitchurch, added that Tesco denied responsibility for the fall, even though there was no warning sign and the spilled food had not been cleaned up.

“I just went in to do some shopping and I was walking down one of the aisles where the sauces are,” she said.

“I slipped and when I sat up the sauce was all over my shoes.”

Mrs Ratcliffe contacted the company about the incident – which happened at around 2pm on September 13 – but said that she received a solicitor’s letter saying that there were hourly checks of each aisle and half-hourly produce aisle checks.

The letter added that staff were trained to deal with spillages but there were no reports of any from 1.30-2pm and Tesco could not have done anything to prevent the fall.

Mrs Ratcliffe said that store staff were “very good” with her after she fell,

But of her complaint, she added: “I’m just hurt about how they treated me because I’m a customer.”

“I know they can’t help things from falling but I wouldn’t have expected them to be quite so blunt as to say ‘it’s your hard luck’.”

Mrs Ratcliffe was checked at Whitchurch Community Hospital and later send to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after suffering a fractured shoulder.

She required two visits to the fracture clinic in Shrewsbury and still faces several weekly physiotherapy sessions.

Tesco has offered Mrs Ratcliffe a £100 gift card as a goodwill gesture, which she had refused.

“I don’t think there is anything (I can do to take it further). I just didn’t think it would be treated quite so lightly as they have done,” she said.

“I think I have been treated very shabbily.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We take all accidents very seriously and have stringent policies and procedures in place to try and prevent any accidents at our stores.

“In this instance we are very sorry to hear of Mrs Ratcliffe’s accident in our Whitchurch store and wish her the best for her recovery. We have carried out a full independent investigation which has concluded that her injury was not a result of any wrongdoing by Tesco. We have offered Mrs Ratcliffe a gesture of goodwill to support her in her recovery.”
