Gobowen Primary School has raised more than £1,000 for leading children’s charity the NSPCC.

The £1,054, raised through cake sales, sponsorship and a colour run, will help fund the charity’s vital work keeping children safe from abuse.

To celebrate, the school held a special ‘thank you assembly’ attended by members of the NSPCC’s Schools Service.

The school was inspired to support the NSPCC after volunteers and staff delivered its ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ assemblies and workshops there, teaching pupils aged five to 11 how to recognise sexual, emotional and physical abuse, and who they can talk to.

Headteacher Ronan Walsh said: “We wanted to support the NSPCC as it is so important for children to know how to keep themselves safe, and the ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ programme is a crucial way of getting these messages across.

“Children and young people are facing so many risks, particularly online and on social media, so as a school we want to do all we can to ensure they know how to stay safe.”

Kate Warner, NSPCC Schools Service area co-ordinator for Shropshire, said: “We are grateful to Gobowen Primary School for their fantastic support.

“It has been a pleasure to deliver ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ to them, and this money will make a huge difference to the work being done by the NSPCC every day.”

‘Speak Out. Stay Safe’ consists of an assembly presentation for children aged 5-11 followed by a one hour classroom workshop for children in years 5/6.
