Users at Swan Mere Day Centre have been busy crafting poppies to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.

Esme Roberts, one of the directors of the day centre, said that members have been making poppies for weeks and have really enjoyed the process.

“They’ve really enjoyed making the poppies; they’ve all been busy reminiscing while making the flowers,” said Esme.

“They’re really proud of their work, which is always lovely to see.”

The poppies, made from old plastic bottles, took three weeks to be cut, painted and decorated before being hung at the town hall, where the day centre takes place.

“The poppy display was also included in the First World War commemorations in Ellesmere over the weekend, which is really great for our members too,” continued Esme.

The Swan Mere Day Centre, which is a Community Interest Company (CIC), takes place four days a week and is open to older people, with the oldest member aged 96. The centre currently has around nine members a day, with Esme describing the group as “a family”.

The centre is also hosting a Christmas Fair on Saturday, November 17, which takes place from 2pm to 4pm at the town hall, will see a range of stalls with plants, cake, jewellery and crafts, as well as a raffle and tombola.

Admission is £2 to include refreshments.

“Because we’re a CIC all the money goes towards the day centre,” Esme added.

“There’s a need for places like Swan Mere – we’ve been going for five years so we must be doing something right!”
