Whitchurch's war memorial in Station road is one of more than 40 to be listed in an Historic England project in Shropshire.

More than 2,500 have been listed across the country in a project that has taken around four years to complete.

The memorial which was visited by hundreds for Remembrance Day on Sunday, is a Grade II-listed monument.

Doddington War Memorial, churchyard of St John the Baptist Church, Doddington, and also a Grade II is listed as well.

Duncan Wilson, chief executive of Historic England, said: “The stories behind these memorials are very moving and each one tells us how devastating the First World War was for communities across the country.

"More than a million Britons lost their lives during the war and it’s important that their sacrifice and struggle is not forgotten.

"By protecting and repairing war memorials we are ensuring that we remember them for years to come.”
