At the Whitchurch rotary meeting on October 23 members wore some purple attire to mark World Polio day with the disease now eliminated worldwide except for Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria with mention made of the magnificent contribution made by Rotary International.

The Borderbrook School Rotakids group had raised £159 from a coffee morning towards the purchase of Aqua boxes and it was agreed to increase this amount to £300 to supply two.

Further disbursements were agreed as: £100 to Sierra Leone medical aid, £500 to Indonesian relief, £150 to Bronington Jubilee lunch club and £378 to the Graham Fulford trust.

Flicks in the Sticks

Flicks in the Sticks is showing 'Journey's End' (12a) in Whitchurch as part of Shropshire's Wilfred Owen 100 Festival, remembering the county's poet and soldier one hundred years since the end of the First World War.

The film will be on the big screen at The Talbot Theatre, Whitchurch Leisure Centre, at 7.30 pm on November 6. Based on RC Sherriff's play and novel of the same name, Journey's End is set in March 1918.

Whitchurch Hear Here Group meet on Tuesday, November 6 at 2pm. in the Senior Club, Pearl Yard, Whitchurch.

The speaker will be Angela Ritchie who will give a demonstration of Christmas Flower Arrangements and Table Decorations.

Wem

Fireworks

Wem will be holding its firework display at Wem Sports and Social Association on Monday, November 5.

The fire will be lit at 6.30pm while the display will start at 7pm.

There is food and drink available on sale and in the interests in health and safety, sparklers will not be permitted at the event.

Prices are £4 for adults, £2 for children and it free for under-fives.

Remembrance service

Wem will be holding its Armistice Day parade on Sunday, November 11 at the Parish Church, starting at 10.50am.

It will begin at on the grass around the War Memorial followed by a service in the Parish Council.

British Legion members, Scouts, Guides, Brownies, and all other interested organisations are invited to assemble at the main car park at 10.30 a.m ready for march-off at 10.45 am.

The parade will be led by the Wem Jubilee Band.
