Whitchurch's Queensway Playing Fields ties up another year of Grocontinental sponsorship

Queensway Playing Fields Association has been sponsored by Grocontinental for a fourth year to support the maintenance of the site, including a fishing lake, football pitches, woodland and a children’s play area.

The donation of £2,000 was presented to committee representatives by Grocontinental’s head of operations, Steve Plant, who visited the playing fields during a weekend of fishing activity.

Events included fishing coaching for more than 30 children provided by the Canal & River Trust, a fishing match for adults and a barbecue.

And for Steve, the visit to the playing fields was something of a trip down memory lane.

“I played here for hours on end as a youngster growing up in Whitchurch and it’s great to see so many people enjoying what there is to offer here," he said.

"We are very lucky to have such a fantastic green space in the middle of the town which is surrounded by so many houses.

“The playing fields have been regenerated so well and constantly maintained to such a high standard.

"The committee and their team of volunteers should be very proud of the hard work that they have all put into the site and what they’ve achieved here overall.

“Many of our staff and their families live in the Queensway area and we are really pleased to be able to do it our bit to support the work here.

"Steve Evans, who works with us as a driver, donates hours of his time to maintain the playing fields and we have Eric Brown, also from our team, who is coaching children on behalf of the Canal & River Trust.”

Jane Caine, treasurer of the Queensway Playing Fields Association, who received the sponsorship cheque, said: “To receive a fourth year of sponsorship from Grocontinental is a real boost for the future of the playing fields.

"The funds will be used for the essential maintenance we need to carry out across the site throughout the year. We are very grateful for the on-going support.”
