Wem TOWN COUNCIL is calling on residents to join with them and the Royal British Legion to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

More than 57 residents of the town lost their lives during the 1914-18 conflict and in addition to the traditional Remembrance Sunday commemorations on November 11, the council and Legion want to create a display of poppies running through the town centre.

To achieve this the Town Council and RBL would like as many people in Wem as possible to use their creative skills to turn a paper plate into a Remembrance Poppy.

The decorated poppies will then be linked together and displayed in shop windows along the High Street and around the town during the week before Remembrance Sunday.

The council will supply paper plates to any interested groups or individuals who want to be involved and our only requirement is that the finished plate should be red in colour with a black centre to represent a poppy.

It is anticipated that the plates will be distributed towards the end of September and should be completed by October 19.

If your group would like to be part of this project, contact Penny O’Hagan at Wem Town Council on 01939 232733, info@wem.gov.uk for more information and state how many plates you require.

Meanwhile, Wem is working to becoming 'Dementia Friendly', an initiative is led by The Alzheimer’s Society and supported by the Wem Economic Forum.

Businesses, organisations, clubs and groups – however large or small – are being encouraged to sign up as supporters by attending a Dementia Friends session and considering how small actions can make a huge positive difference.

There are three Dementia Friends sessions left, on Wednesday, October 3 and Thursday, October 11, both at 7pm at Wem Cricket Club, or Tuesday, October 23rd at Wem Town Hall at 5.30pm.

Dementia Friendly Wem is a way to make it easier for people living with dementia to remain active and involved in their communities.
