Tilston Wakes was another hit, having to largely survive a bank holiday downpour to entertain hundreds last weekend.

The event, which took place on August 25 and 26, had a procession led by Fayre Play and Shrewsbury Levy, with a rush cart decorated with flowers and bulrushes carried Lillie Ford, Miss Wakes, her attendant Savannah Gibson-Rose, and John Thompson, the new Lord Mayor.

There were giant puppets, including a very vocal Elvis, to enlivened the procession, which also featured a giant dragon peopled by local teenagers, and a huge elephant, both created by Sally Sharpe of Malpas.

A spokesperson said: “The entertainment, music, food and drink went on until midnight. On Sunday it looked as if it would be a washout but eventually the rain stopped and residents arrived with flowers, fruit, cakes and 31 dogs for the competitions.

“The Birmingham Pals’ displays were interesting and informative about the First World War while the famous ‘Tilston Ox’ was roasted to perfection by Ron Rimmer and his helpers.
