Whitchurch Alport is the gift that just keeps on giving after Luke Goddard's men won the club's first ever FA Cup match at the weekend.

Saturday’s 1-0 away win at Coventry Sphinx gave Alport an historic first ever win in the Emirates FA Cup.

The Reds don’t know their fate yet although the second round draw for the extra preliminary matches had been drawn in advance as Walsall Wood earned themselves a replay after a last minute equaliser against Worcester City at Oak Park.

Alport will travel once again with Wood less of an unknown quantity after the two sides met in Alport’s first ever FA Cup tie last season.

The Reds Lee Pickerill is the man whose name will be forever etched into Whitchurch Alport’s history courtesy of his winning goal with just 19 minutes to play.

These are heady times for the town and its football club with interest at the kind of levels not seen since the late 60’s and early 70’s when the club enjoyed the best period in its 72-year history to date.

Goddard’s feels no-one is sure of what this close-knit team can go on to achieve and while the Reds supremo might not admit to it, he must be pinching himself at the run of success being enjoyed at Yockings Park.

“It’s not that long ago since I was taking my Crewe FC side to Yockings Park for a Cheshire League game and there’d be something like 10 people watching the game," he said.

"Now we are filling a supporters coach to travel to the West Midlands – it’s crazy.

"If we could’ve scripted out today then that will have been it; the lads listened and believed in what we had told them in preparation for the game and they deservedly got their rewards.

"These are tough games and Midlands football is far more physical than what we are used to in our own league so they knew they had to match that this afternoon.

"Defensively we were strong and on the reverse we looked a threat every time we went forward, if anything I’m disappointed we only scored the one as we could’ve really killed the game off which would’ve made for an easier final period.

"However they’ve all given everything out there today and ultimately it’s knock out football so we are delighted as a group.

"Obviously I cannot thank the supporters enough for their outstanding support yet again. This small sleeping town is now no more, the connection between everyone and its football club is extremely powerful.

"It really is the gift that keeps on giving and today is a further memory we can saviour because trust me in football you have to cherish the good times, so thank you. We can now look forward to another FA Cup match in two weeks’ time”

Alport return to league action this weekend with a trip to Padihan before entertaining 1874 Northwich on Monday night at Yockings Park.
