THE Oswestry-based charity, Qube, has helped Polish families get in touch with their cultural heritage.

More than 20 local children and their families took part in a colourful, artist-led workshop at the Hightown Community Centre, Wrexham, where they created a spectacular array of papercuts.

The traditional art form, known as ‘Wycinanki’ was once a kind of home decoration in rural homes.

Women used sheep-shearing scissors to create paper shapes and pasted them onto their white-washed walls. They designed cut-outs for weddings and family events, and created images for religious events.

Qube’s arts development officer, Vanessa Baldry, said: “When we approached members of the Polish community they were extremely enthusiastic about the idea. It was thrilling to see so many families turn up on the day and join in the activity.”
