WITH just three games remaining in Whitchurch Alport’s season, their automatic promotion hopes have all but ended after an Easter programme that saw five points dropped.
Saturday’s scoreless draw at Bacup Borough was followed by an agonising 2-1 home defeat to Litherland Remyca on Monday, which cost Reds a chance to go third in the table.
It looks almost certain now that Alport will see their season extended by a week, with the play-offs almost certain to be their only route to the Premier Division.
But it wasn’t all bad news for the team that everybody in local non-league football circles are talking about.
While Evo Stik First Division side Market Drayton could attract only 102 fans along to Greenfields, and Premier Division promotion chasers Nantwich Town got 512 into the Weaver Stadium, Alport bettered both combined as they hosted a record crowd of 670 at Yockings Park!
The team found themselves trailing 2-0 at home to fellow promotion hopefuls Litherland Remyca early in the second half. But they rallied in the last 20 minutes and were a coat of paint away from a stunning late leveller.
