WHITCHURCH Alport will go into tonight’s (Wednesday) Ethelston Cup quarter-final against old adversaries Malpas in buoyant mood after they secured another last-eight League Cup date by beating Alsager Town on Saturday.

More than 180 people were up at Yockings on a bitterly cold afternoon to see their team brush aside the challenge of the Cheshire side – a 4-0 scoreline being the Bullets’ biggest defeat of the season to date.

Alport now have a date on December 3 at Holker – the only team to beat Whitchurch this season away from Shropshire, and that came back in mid-August!

That will mean the scheduled home game against Atherton LR will be postponed, probably into the new year.

Speaking after the win over Alsager, co-manager Carl Everall said: “Overall, it was a near perfect performance. Although under difficult circumstances, we were bitterly disappointed to lose to Maine Road the week before so felt we had to make up for that in the Reusch Cup – especially in front of our own fans.

“The boys were excellent from the first minute right up until the 92nd. Most noticeably, we felt the performances from Alex Hughes and Mike Blundell in attacking positions, went some way to giving us the upper hand."
