Whitchurch Alport may well have impressed the City of Liverpool supporters with a classy away performance on Tuesday night, but they gained the respect of everyone associated with the Merseysiders with a magnificent gesture off the pitch.

The community-owned club have taken the North West Counties League by storm this season, and have had crowds in excess of 700 at the Delta Taxis Stadium in Bootle.

City of Liverpool have a partnership with Supporting Foodbanks, a charity aimed at collecting foodstuffs for the hungry and needy in the city.

Alport seized on the opportunity to support the worthy cause and presented bags of shopping to stunned club officials before the game, which ended in a 3-2 win for the Reds.

Skipper Si Everall said: “We thought it was important as a club that we showed that we had something about us.

“It’s a fantastic cause and we wanted people to see that we’re not just a bunch of nonleague footballers who don’t care.

“We take things for granted sometimes so it was nice to give something back, and City of Liverpool couldn’t believe what we’d done.”

Paul Morgan – who set up the idea of the foodbanks – said: “Everyone associated with the club was really impressed with what Whitchurch did.

“That’s the first time we’ve seen an away club buy in to what it is we’re trying to do for the people of this city who have fallen on hard times.

“They’re a great bunch of lads and they seem to have a similar community feel to us.

"They deserve all the credit for what they did and everyone should follow the example they set."
