Whitchurch Alport went into last night’s home clash against Alsager Town brimming with confidence after two stunning away performances netted maximum points.
However, it was another case of one-step forward, two steps back for the Yockings Park club as Alsager came from behind to record a 2-1 win, despite Alex Hughes giving Alport the lead from the spot.
Two goals in ten minutes from Kyle Diskin gave the Cheshire side the win.
Whitchurch had suffered back-to-back defeats against experienced sides Holker and Charnock Richard, so it was important to try to see a response from what is essentially a youthful side still learning their trade.
But the maturity shown at both Oswestry and Stockport has sent out a message to the rest of the teams in Division One that Alport are a very capable outfit and they may well go on to surprise a few this season.
A 3-0 victory at Park Hall in Tuesday’s highly-anticipated Shropshire derby set the Reds up nicely for the weekend trip to Stockport, who went close to sealing promotion to the Premier Division in their inaugural North West Counties campaign.
