Something's got to give when high fliers Whitchurch and Droitwich lock horns in the Midlands divisional final of the RFU Intermediate Cup at Edgeley Park on Saturday (3pm).

There's plenty riding on this weekend's showdown as the in-form sides look to move closer to a showpiece Twickenham final in May.

Whitchurch coach Scott Sturdy is calling for 'a five-star performance' from his all-conquering side who warmed up for the crunch clash with last weekend's 40-16 success at Veseyans.

They will need to step up a gear against Droitwich who were cup finalists at rugby's headquarters last year before losing 37-15 to Surrey side Farnham.

Both clubs have been in unstoppable form this term to fly high in their respective leagues, and remarkably have virtually identical records.

Whitchurch have won all 17 games in the Midlands Two West (North), and stand on 80 points (572 points for and 179 against), while Droitwich have also won all 17 in the Midlands Two West (South), and have accrued 83 points (593-221).

If the form guide is anything to go by, Saturday's big clash is too close to call, but the Reds can take heart from their narrow 29-26 victory away to their Worcestershire rivals in the first round of the North Mids Shield earlier in the campaign.

But Sturdy is fully expecting his players to be up for the challenge of reaching the next step before Twieckenham.

"It's a massive game, the biggest test we've faced this season, and I'm looking for a five star performance," said Sturdy.

"We've scored more than 200 points in our last four games and conceded just 30, so it bodes well.

"We've got a good depth in our squad, and the players are looking forward to stepping up to the challenge

"We need to start better than we did last week against Veseyans as we may not get a chance to come back against Droitwich, so we've got plenty to work on in training this week.

"After we beat them in the North Mids Shield, they'll be looking for revenge, and will want to be back at Twickenham again."

The Reds will field a 22-man squad for the game, but will be without winger Tom Skone and forward Ian Gillespie who are both unavailable,

Should they get through this weekend, Whitchurch will go into the north semi-final – and will stand just one game away from the Twickenham final on May 6.

The club is encouraging as many people as possible to come down and support the Reds in their bid to make Twickenham.

The club will be open before and after the match, with dignitaries from the Midlands rugby community visiting Edgeley Park for the clash against Droitwich.
