Premiership side Sale Sharks are coming back to Whitchurch this summer to give rugby-mad youngsters the chance to meet the club’s biggest stars and develop their skills at a new rugby camp ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The two-day course at Whitchurch Rugby Club’s Edgeley Park ground runs from Thursday, August 31, and is aimed at boys and girls aged between six and 12.

RFU-qualified coaches from Sale Sharks’ award-winning community team will give youngsters advice on core skills such as running, evasion, handling, kicking and tackling as well as decision making in attack and defence through games that encourage a sense of fun and enjoyment.

And youngsters who sign up will all get the chance to meet first-team players such as new England call-ups Tom and Ben Curry – who went to school at nearby Bishop Heber, in Malpas – either on the camp or at a mini and junior training session during the season.

Darren Lamon, the lead coach for the Sale Sharks camps, said: “These camps give us the chance to get out into the rugby clubs around the north west and see just how much talent there is among the region’s youngsters – and for those who just want to have a go, they’re perfect too.

“Our 2016 summer camps were incredibly popular and our academy coaches can’t wait to get out there again and deliver top-quality tips and advice.

“We’re expecting two fantastic days of rugby in Whitchurch but places are limited so we’re urging people to book early to avoid disappointment. These camps really are where young sharks cut their teeth.”

Sale Sharks first-team winger Will Addison was discovered at one of the club’s residential summer camps.

He said: “For some of the older kids, going to a camp might be the start of something special.

“If you have the talent, there’s no reason why a camp couldn’t be a route into the club’s academy structure.

“That’s where I got my big break.”

The camps, which are being run in conjunction with Premiership Rugby, cost £50 per child.

That price includes a Sale Sharks branded gift and a ticket to a Sharks home game.
