Coach Scott Sturdy will be looking to put the finishing touches to his Whitchurch rugby squad before pre-season gets under way at the beginning of July. “I’m hoping to bring two or three in, but nothing is done and dusted yet,” he said. “I’m looking for the right players, but at the moment I’m still in negotiations. “Once I finalise the squad, we can then start planning for pre-season. From a coaching perspective we are all set up.” Sturdy will be assisted by a new addition to the coaching staff, Ollie Taylor from Old Halesonians RFC, as he looks to revive fortunes following last season’s relegation to Midlands Two North (West). He has lost the services of Ben Vincent, Mike Oakden and Nigel Williams, but most of last seas-on’s squad have indicated they will be staying with the club. The Reds are currently running touch rugby sessions at Edgeley Park every Thursday night, before training resumes in earnest on Tuesday, July 4. Three friendlies are planned, starting with a home fixture against Shrewsbury on Saturday, August 5. The following week, the club will be sending two teams to take on Droitwich, before the first team welcome North Wales side Bethesda on August 19. The season starts on Saturday September 2 with a North Mids Shield fixture,The following week, the Reds will play their first league game, before launching what they hope will be a good run in the Intermediate Cup  on September 16. The draws for the cup competitions will be made at the end of the month, while the league fixtures are expected to be released this week.
