Former Bishop Heber School student Ben Woodburn’s meteoric rise is continuing after he was shortlisted for a prestigious award.

The Liverpool and Wales striker is in the running to be crowned BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2017.

If the former Malpas school student wins, he would follow in the footsteps of England and Everton star Wayne Rooney and Claufia Fragapane, who local readers will know as AJ Pritchard’s dance partner in 2016’s Strictly series.

Other winners include Jenson Button, Sir Andy Murray, Tom Daley and Ellie Simmonds.

Woodburn has had a 12 months to remember, making his debut for Liverpool and becoming their youngest ever scorer, while this year he became Wales’s second-ever youngest scorer, despite being born in Chester.

Woodburn spent a year at the Chester Road school before commitments in Liverpool meant a change in his education.

The winner of the award will be announced alongside the main winner at the event, to be held in Liverpool, on Sunday December 17.
