COACH Scott Sturdy could take plenty of positives from Whitchurch’s only friendly before the season starts after being given a good workout by north Wales League division one side Bethesda.

After two pre-season games had been cancelled, the Reds finally got some competitive action at Edgeley Park in a game that saw four quarters of 20 minutes.

The Midlands Two West (North) side ran in four tries to three from the visitors with some pleasing performances from their 20-man squad.

“Being our only friendly, it was important we got as much out of it as possible, which we did,” said Sturdy.

“It was a good workout for the boys, certainly a worthwhile exercise, and good to get a win. We had to show good intensity as Bethesda came with 27 players and were able to bring on fresh legs throughout.

“We were able to mix it up and have a good look at players. It was a decent game – some things went well, others we have to work on.

“We scored four tries and we left two or three others on the field. We need to have more penetration in possession, and to make sure we take our opportunities when they come along – something we didn’t do last season.”
