THE Ellesmere College Sevens Rugby team are celebrating after tasting victory in the prestigious Christ College Cup.
Having prepared for six weeks in the build up to the tournament the Ellesmere side were good value for their triumph, topping their group by winning all their matches, and scoring an impressive 131 points for the loss of just 22 in their four games.
Ellesmere then took on host side, Christ College Brecon, in the first round of the knockout stages, and overcame strong home support at the home of the mid-Wales-based side to overcome their opponents by 26 points to 15.
As confidence grew within the camp, Ellesmere set course for an appearance in the final by disposing of Kings Worcester by the same scoreline and lined up to easily dispose of a Plymouth side in the semis, 30-0, to put one hand on the trophy.
With Ellesmere chasing the Llangoed Hall Rose Bowl trophy for the first time, they took to the field against Llandovery in confident mood for the final.
Bryn Phillips' crossfield kick fell kindly for Jack Baxter who dived in at the corner, and Tom King opened up space before Adam King produced a marvellous solo effort to put Ellesmere firmly in the driving seat.
Ross Mackaill rounded off another slick move as Ellesmere stretched away, but whilst Llandovery did manage to cross the line themselves, George Baxter rounded off the win to clinch the trophy.
