HER potential was first spotted at Sir John Talbot’s School in Whitchurch, and now Lucy Martin is bidding for a place in the GB women’s cycling team at this summer’s Olympic Games.
Lucy 21, lived in Whitchurch during her school years, but now lives in Girona, Spain where she trains full time during the season.
She said: “British Cycling Talent Scheme scouts went to SJT and hundreds of schools, and we were put on mountain bikes and timed. I got a letter back saying I had got through to the next round, then went through to final selection in a velodrome and found myself in the final 20 in the region.”
Lucy was then fast-tracked into the sport, gaining a coach and a bike, and made the regional squad.
Lucy won the junior national road race championship in 2008 and has since competed in world championships and international races, reaching the podium and top ten.
She came 14th in the Commonwealth Games road race, and rides for the professional AA Drinks Leontien women’s team.
There are six girls on the long list for the four-strong Olympic team, and final selection is on June 7.
