A man who made threats to a former partner armed with a knife outside her Wem home in the early hours has been jailed.

Liam Wilson was said to have been banging on the doors and windows and had tried to get in through a kitchen window at the flat last month.

Victim Jay Whitfield suffered an injury to her hand as she tried to stop Wilson getting into the flat.

At Shrewsbury Crown Court on Friday, Wilson, 26, who was in custody on remand, was sentenced in his absence after he refused to leave prison to attend the hearing.

He was jailed for a total of 17 months for possession of a knife and assault committed in February, this year.

Recorder Martin Butterworth said that Wilson's 'entrenched jealousy' had spilled over into violence and making threats and terrifying the victim.

Wilson was given 21 weeks for possession of a weapon and a consecutive three months for assaulting his ex-partner.

Recorder Butterworth also activated a nine-month suspended sentence which had been imposed in August, last year, for possession of a craft knife and making threats to kill involving the same victim.

Wilson, of Bleachfield, Hanwood, Shrewsbury, was also made subject to a restraining order not to contact the victim and not to enter Wem for an indefinite period.

In an impact statement Miss Whitfield said she was drained by Wilson's behaviour and anxious and he had caused problems with her employer.

Kevin Jones, prosecuting, said the couple had broken up a year ago but in February this year Miss Whitfield had received Facebook messages about her having a male friend at her flat in High Street, Wem.

On February 18, the defendant was in the Church Stretton area and travelled some distance arriving in Wem around 2.15am.

Mr Jones said Wilson was banging on the door and Miss Whitfield told him to go away and he started kicking the door and she called the police as Wilson banged on the windows.

He said Wilson was trying to get in through the kitchen window and the assault related to an injury to the end of the victim's ring finger which was bleeding as she tried to hold the window shut.

Wilson was shouting for the victim's friend to come outside and said 'I'm going to kill him'. He discarded the knife as the police arrived but it was located by a nearby phone box.

Simon Rippon, for Wilson, said his client accepted it was an unpleasant event and that the injury was the result of him being reckless, rather than being deliberate.
