Wem Town mayor Councillor Edward Towers says all councillors need to agree on any action going forward before making any long-term plans for a relief road.

Cllr Towers was speaking at the full town council meeting on Thursday at Edinburgh House where he updated his fellow members on a meeting with North Shropshire MP Owen Paterson and other potential stakeholders.

He also added that they, Wem Rural Parish Council and Shropshire Council all need to be on the same page in order made improve their chances of receive central government funding.

"It's best to start to get a plan together but it takes man hours and funding to do it," he said.

"We will try to consult people and we've told Mr Paterson it has to have national money put into but (we know) it may be mainly Shropshire money.

"We have to agree as a council, as do Wem Rural and that will make Shropshire Council agree. Once all three of us, the government will listen."

Meanwhile, councillors voted to support an application from Thomas Adams School, in Lowe Hill Road, to maintain mobile classrooms for another decade, provided they are fit for purpose.

However, Shropshire and town councillor Chris Mellings voted against because he did not support the temporary use of mobile classrooms.

The council will try to establish surgeries at forthcoming events on the advice of town clerk Penny O'Hagan, rather than have pop-up events.

She suggested having stalls at events such as markets, etc. It was agreed that Mrs O'Hagan would draw up guidelines for councillors for the events.

Meanwhile, Cllr Towers will be entered into a draw by SALC for a potential invite to a Buckingham Palace garden party next summer.
