Councillors in Wem have given their support to two planning applications in the town.

A proposal for the repair to and remedial works of, including re-pointing, to rear elevation as well as treatment of exposed woodwork and lead work at 52 High Street was given unanimous support.

Councillor Peter Broomhall even stated his praise for the applicant in carrying out the works and maintaining high standards, with many councillors agreeing.

There was also support for the building of a single-storey side and rear extension at Lyndale, in Fir Tree Lane.

Town clerk Penny O’Hagan also confirmed that permission had been granted for an application to extended a dwelling at 1 Soulton Crescent.

Meanwhile, councillors heard back from a meeting held with Shropshire Council Conservation officers last month about the town.

The meeting had been arranged following concerns expressed by Shropshire Councillor Chris Mellings about properties within the Wem Conservation Area.

The first issue discussed was signs on buildings on the High Street displaying ‘Just Eat’ signage, and it was suggested a potential joint Wem and Shropshire Councils campaign to ask the takeaway app to tone it down in conservation areas.

The meeting also discussed deteriorating conditions on the White Horse, with the council receiving correspondence asking for it to be brought into community use.

In other items, councillors received the results of a planning or ideas session about an ‘action plan’, helping them engage with members of the public and move the town forward.

Ideas discussed included more regular coffee mornings, acting as informal surgeries, and improved use of social media.
