Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Communications student Harry Wright has landed his dream media job thanks to his studies at Wrexham Glyndwr University.

Harry, 22, originally from Malpas, won a job as a news reporter with The Leader while completing the university’s journalism short course.

But the dream of a job in journalism came from his years on the Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Communications degree after signing up as a foundation year student.

Now Harry is putting all his media skills to use as a journalist based at Wrexham covering stories from armed raids to golden wedding anniversaries.

“Looking back, it is my time on the degree course that enabled me to be where I am now, even if I didn't realise it at the time,” said Harry.

Opportunities during his degree years included working with the Wrexham AFC communications team, handling the media for the university’s motor racing team and working with local football club, TNS.

During his specialist journalism course he was on placement with one of Newsquest North Wales’ weekly newspapers and was then offered a full time post as a journalist with The Leader at Wrexham.

“I never considered a career as a journalist, in fact I wanted to be a police officer. It was at college studying public services that I started writing for a friend's sports website and picked up the writing bug.

“Because of that I found a spot on the Broadcast Journalism and Media Communications degree, which in turn led me to the National Council for the Training of Journalists course.

“It's one of those things where I hadn't appreciated how much I had learnt until I put it into practice. While it is at the paper that I'm picking up the proper journalistic skills, it is my time at uni that has built the framework, “said Harry.

Programme leader for the Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Communications course, Angela Ferguson, said that Harry’s success was a tribute to the degree’s broad platform of media skills and industry focused projects.

“The media world is becoming more diverse and multi-skilled so we’re really proud to see that our degree is giving them the wide range experience and guidance they need to break into their chosen media careers,” she said.
