A COMMITTEE to commemorate Malpas's role in the First World War 100 years after it ended are launching a poetry competition.

The “Malpas 100 Years On” committee want entries for juniors (7-10), seniors (11-17) and community (18 and above). Sharon Jones, from the committee, said: "We hope the whole community will get involved – the key message is to broaden the appreciation of ‘Those That Gave All’ for their country.

The poetry competition launches activities in preparation for a three-day event in Malpas on November 9-11.

Sharon has been out visiting schools to help youngsters develop their knowledge of the war and the competition, which is free to enter, is open to all.

The maximum length of the poem is 10 lines and should be typed out in a single space 10 or 12 font on a single side of A4.

Entries close on March 26 and the selected overall winning entry from “Malpas 100 Years On” poetry competition is to be put forward for display by The British Legion Riders Branch at Menin Gate – dedicated to British and Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Ypres Salient who have no known grave.

They will visit in April.
