No Man's Heath residents can feel a little bit safer after a defibrillator was installed at the Wheatsheaf Inn.

The defibrillator will be based at the pub and will be available to all, while landlady Tracey Whibberley, a self-confessed heal fan is pleased with the decision to install it and was happy with the support she received from the parish council.

"I'm ecstatic to have it here, it just made sense," she said. "It used to be in the shop, and the parish council was enthusiastic to move it to the pub.

"It needed to be here, and now it's all about getting the message out that it exists."

The defibrillator itself was installed by Mike Ainslie, a paramedic for the North West Ambulance Service and a No Man's Heath Resident.

"Having a defibrillator can be vital," he said.

"When you go into cardiac arrest your heart goes into an erratic rhythm which means your heart isn’t pumping blood around the body.

"In this state a person would die within minutes if you don’t perform basic life support and attach an automated external defibrillator (AED)."

He hopes to hold 'heart start' courses; interested people can contact michael.ainslie@nwas.nhs.uk

He added: "Knowing the location of these AED’s can really help save lives. When the member of the public phones 999 they should be told where the nearest AED is and the code to get into the cabinet. If you turn the AED on it gives you instructions on what to do.

As well as the Wheatsheaf in No Man's Heath, Malpas also defibrillators located in the Co-op, Prospect House and at the Fire Station.
