A BURPEE mile challenge will be taking place at Basecamp Health and Fitness Centre in Ellesmere Business Park on May 20.

All proceeds from the event will go to Charlie’s Fund, in memory of Charlie Bailey, who died from a muscle-wasting disease, aged 15, in 2015.

The challenge is open to anyone who wants have a go. They just need to collect a sponsorship form from the Basecamp gym.

A burpee is simply a exercise when you jump down to the floor, into a press-up position and jump back up. The challenge is to do this for a mile.

Charlie’s mum Charlotte said: “We’ve got the tape measure out and we think its going to take two-and-a-half to three hours to complete. It’ll be quite difficult.

“Charlie’s Fund is something I set up.

“I want to raise the funds to pay the legal team to investigate into Charlie’s death.

“We have already raised £4,000 but we are just at the beginning.

“I don’t know how much it is going to cost so I want to raise as much as possible.

“My other son, Bobby, has the same condition as Charlie.

“With any leftover money I would like to buy some equipment for him as the NHS don’t pay for it.”

Muscle-wasting disease affects nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement.

It is the decrease in the mass of the muscle tissue and a weakness in movement which makes it extremely hard to carry out day-to-day activities.
