Wrexham Council hits back after town MP’s job jibe

WREXHAM Council’s leader has hit back at criticism of a plan to take on a high powered £80,000-a-year transport supremo.

Cllr Aled Roberts has insisted the job WOULD be filled and that it would eventually save the council £1 million.

Since the Leader broke the news on Tuesday a row has broken out with harsh criticism from Wrexham MP Ian Lucas and the Leader’s website and letters page reaching boiling point over what is seen as a waste of public money in the same week that the Government hit the nation with the hardest budget since World War Two.

The council wants to take on a programme manager on an initial six-month contract to shake up the transport department which Cllr Roberts described as “a very important role”.

In a swipe at the Wrexham MP, Cllr Roberts said: “Mr Lucas can say what he likes about it, especially when you look at the number of posts taken on by the last government.

“The person appointed will have target savings that they have to deliver. Initially that will be four times their salary of £80,000 and eventually £1 million.”

Cllr Roberts said the appointment was part of the council’s transformation agenda and was enthusiastically approved when it came before the executive board.

“The person appointed will be responsible for restructuring and redefining the transporartion department.”

Cllr David Bithell, lead member for environment and transport, said: “This post has been advertised both internally and externally to deliver change within the Transport Department at Wrexham Council where currently transport fleet and transport services are based within two different departments.

“The review undertaken was to look at a more joined up approach to transport co-ordination by the way of a an integrated transport unit.

“A report was presented to members and the fundamental element of the report was to achieve savings on how best we operate all transport services, cut out any unnecessary waste and obtain value for money.

“The post holder will be responsible to ensure these savings in the region of £1 million are achieved. This does not mean we will be offering poorer services.

“I understand that given the current financial climate a new post of £80,000, although only temporary, does not sit well but to deliver these savings we need the right person with the necessary expertise.

“Given that we are looking to save in the region of £10m next year as part of the council’s budget process, we have also set up a transformation board, made up of members, officers and a representative from the trade unions looking how best to transform services but at the same time ensuring transparency with the trade unions and staff as well as trying to protect as many of our public services as possible.”

If this person can find £1 million in savings then why have these savings been identified and implemented before? £1m seems like a figure grabbed out of thin air, by people full of hot air. Are they saying management and councillors have been wasting that year on year?

Got to agree, £1m does seem unrealistic and it also begs the question, why wasn't the post filled before; but, bottom line, if the expertise is needed and if, at the end of the day it saves the Council £81k, then it's justified. But there are still some uncomfortable questions about what's been happening up to now.

£80,000 to look at what we already have beggars the question of what calibre of employees does the authority have if we have to advertise outside for this post and who let it all get so costly that we're now reduced to this? Bad governance Mr Roberts, bad governance!

It does beg the question as to why no action was taken before on the identified savings maybe a far better idea would be to employ someone to take a look at all depts and identify area's where savings could be made

I totally agree with what they are doing, it may be that they are replacing two £50k per annum roles with one 80k per annum role. I predict there will be lower numbers of management staff and higher numbers of admin. The lower numbers of management is why this person is going to be payed more, because he has greater responsibility over more staff.

gavinrog, if they were "replacing two £50k per annum roles with one 80k per annum role" they would have said so, believe me, they aren't! They are trying to crawl back money they've foolishly overspent and Bithell's words "to look at a more joined up approach to transport co-ordination" means they've messed it up!

I happen to know that many members of staff from the transportation department have been re-deployed or lost there job. The department is reducing in size and saving lot's of money. They need someone with a reasonable skillset to be able to monitor this. Hence the 80k per annum position.

In the private sector "high powered" is synonymous with an extremely accomplished bullshit*ter.I have said here that the job could be undertaken by a 16 year old of average intelligence and the right software. The public and private sectors are awash with brain dead jobs that are dressed up to be important, this job is no different .

Herr tommy ,if the private/public sectors are full off brain dead jobs how do you have so much time to put posts on here because you must be employed 24hrs a day ?

  10. Posted by: liberty1 at 21:56 on 24 June 2010 Report

Herr tommy, just a thought, what is this "right software" you refer to? let us know and i will go to the council and let them know about it and you will have saved us lots of money ,also let them know you will do the job for the good of the community, ie no you wont

tommy, much as I admire your good, old-fashioned socialist ideals, statements of staggering ignorance, like that one you made last night, really undermine any of the more coherent arguments you might put forward.

Lets take a logical approach here.Firstly there is a profound contradiction in the statements made by the council, they are telling us that the person will save the council 1 million pound a year. This is a staggering statement, because it could only be made in the light of genuine knowledge as to how to make the savings...cont

  14. Posted by: tommy at 21:47 on 25 June 2010 Report

..so the question is simple(and logical) if they have already identified HOW to make the savings then why do they need to pay someone to do it,why can't they use existing employees.Or better teach someone how to use Macro's on an Excel sheet and your half way there to not only running transport but the whole effing council.

The problem with most organisation(public and private) is the failure to understand the power of computing. Most people are 30 years behind the times when it comes to understanding the dynamics of modern technology. We have a tool that can transform our world, but it is being misused (and misunderstood) through a combination of ignorence and self interest.

  16. Posted by: tommy at 22:00 on 25 June 2010 Report

The computer is the single biggest advance of mankind and has opened the doors to endless possibilities, the problem is however that the new technology is being stifled by the medievil framework of capitalism,an economic system that belongs in the middle ages. The open source community (of which I am a member)estimate that as a tool the computer is used roughly to 5% of it's true capacity .Truly staggering.

Well there we go folks, Herr tommy will provide the technology and expertise ,he did state that if a 16 yr old was not available he would do the job , we will all be endebted to him for the money he will save Wxm and he will be our hero ,but,he does the talk but can he do the walk? well Herr tommy whats the answer?
