WEM's favourite festive charity run wheeled into town for a fourth year at the weekend, in what the mayor described as an “excellent event”.

Filled with festive spirit, all participants in the Wem Wheelbarrow Fun Pub Run were dressed to match the holiday theme.

The event took place on Sunday, December 17, with Mayor Geoff Soul “really pleased” at how it went.

He said: “It was an excellent event for Wem, and everybody enjoyed it in their own way.

“As mayor I am really pleased to see these social events in town and everyone enjoying themselves.”

The Wheelbarrow race and the Summer Scarecrow Trail for 2023 raised around £766 for Wem Food Hub and Store Cupboard.

The event kicked off at Edinburgh House Car Park for 12 pm start.

Contestants won prizes for Best Dressed Adult, Best Dressed Child, Best Decorated Barrow, and First Team of Two home to the White Lion.

Organiser Sue Holliday took it to Facebook and said: "Our thanks to The White Lion for their generous hospitality and the Mayor Geoff Soul and his wife for attending

"And last but not least Ben and Norm who always complete the course in their own leisurely manner.

First home were Sam and Andy Ellison, while best dressed adults were Kate and Heather as the very amusing pigs in blankets.

The Best Dressed Barra was Gemma and Kass and best dressed child was Willow.

A bottle of wine was presented to Sue Griffiths and Maxine Taylor as retiring veterans with a combined age of 117 who came in second place.

A hamper donated by Wem Co Op was won by Barry Mantle and a second hamper by White Lion was won by Malcolm Angie.

The rules insisted on a half pint being consumed at each pub, and official cards were marked by the event Marshal before participants could carry on.

The route was a “non-negotiable”, leading participants through a string of pubs until reaching the White Lion finish line.
