Members of two north Shropshire Slimming World groups have been praised for taking part in the recent Shrewsbury Race for Life.

A group made up of members from Wem and Whitchurch slimmers were among those taking part in the Cancer Research Race for Life at Shrewsbury Quarry on Sunday, June 18.

Tina Hayward, Wem and Whitchurch Slimming World consultant was thrilled that the company was sponsoring Race for Life for 2023 and took the opportunity to let her members know about the event.

She said “I mentioned it to my members and said it would be great if we could raise as a team about £500 towards the charity.

OTHER NEWS:

“As the weeks passed by more talk in group and more members decided to help with such a worthy cause.

“We were all dressed up in our black and pink sparkly Slimming World family, standing up to fight cancer together.

“It was an emotional day for lots of us there.

”One word can sum up the people, the cause and Slimming World – incredible.

“There was laughter, tears, blisters, hugs and an amazing amount of support for each and everyone.

“I can’t thank all my members enough for taking part and as a team Wem and Whitchurch Slimming World raised a massive £7,054.54.

“The event showed people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be.”

Race for Life is a national fundraising event for Cancer Research UK, where thousands of people are sponsored to run or walk 5km at events across the country, to raise money for lifesaving research.

Tina added that she was on hand with a trusty gazebo to support the event, with 200 goody bags to give out to participants and spectators, then joined in the race alongside members of their Slimming World groups and their families.

Whitchurch Herald:

Lynn Fenlon, from Whitchurch who is a member of Tina’s Whitchurch Slimming World Group, was the first to register who was running for herself having been diagnosed with a rare case of ovarian Cancer, aged 39, who is now in remission.

She said: “I found it really daunting taking those first steps to becoming active but with Slimming World I learnt to find something you enjoy.

“There’s no rule that says being active has to involve a gym or running shorts – hitting the dance floor on a night out is enough to compliment my weight loss.”

Tina’s groups are on Wednesday’s at Wem Methodist Church at 5pm and 6.30pm and Thursdays at Whitchurch Civic Centre at 9am, 10.30am, 5pm and 6.30pm.
