Whitchurch Herald: Inside the new St Mary's Arcade in WhitchurchInside the new St Mary's Arcade in Whitchurch THE developer of a new shopping arcade in Whitchurch has spoken of his excitement after the centre officially opened.

Russell Harrison officially opened the new St Mary's Arcade in High Street on Friday, December 9 alongside new shop owners.

The new arcade is located on the site of the former Poundstretcher store, and Russell was excited about its impact on the town.

Russell said: "The difference between this and the old Woolworths and Poundstretcher is amazing.

"I am really excited and I think it will make such a difference to Whitchurch and the surrounding areas.

"We have got some lovely tenants, who are all local and run existing businesses and we have new businesses.

"It is lovely to see local people and the shop keepers have got really good local followers on social media.

"It was really interesting how the first time I came here I knew what I wanted to do.

"Yes it can be nervous but shopkeepers came in when we put the hoarding up and within five minutes shops were taken.

"That gave me a good feeling about how it would be perceived by the public."

Mr Harrison believes the new arcade will be positive for the high street in Whitchurch.

He said: "I think Whitchurch is at the front of the trend because of you look at other towns, every town would like to be a successful as here.

"You have got brilliant Michelin starred eateries and lots of independent shop keepers.

"I think all the shops in the high street are full. It is a pleasure to be part of that experience."

New businesses officially opened there doors two new customers and Matt Konopielko, owner of tech store Phone Clinic spoke about his excitement.

"It is getting there, we have had people coming in and asking questions," he said.

"It is good for Whitchurch. When it was a Poundstretcher it did not look as big as it does now, it looks completely different.

"We got really good feedback online. It is a work in progress but we feel positive."

New men's sustainable lifestyle store JB and BOOM, run by Jonjo Ashbrook, officially opened its doors to customers and his mother Stella was pleased to finally open it.

She said; "To get it open before Christmas is really exciting.

"Trade is god and I think on the high street we have been quite busy the last few weeks and there is a real positivity in Whitchurch with all the developments.

"I think this little arcade is something special for Whitchurch as it is clean, modern and very progressive and a testament to where the town is heading.

"I just wish everybody success in the St Mary's Arcade."
