Wem Jubilee Band's showcase concerts for new members attracts interest and raises cash

WEM JUBILEE Band was able to showcase the talents of its newest members last week – raising money for a children’s hospital in the process.

The band played a concert at Wem Town Hall in a bid to recruit new members by showing off the talents of those whom have only recently taken up an instrument.

Ruth Wilson, who oversees the band with tutor Aimee Hawke – as well as playing cornet in the main band – said the event went well, with interest already being generated.

“It was a concert to showcase how far the training band has come since we started it from scratch a few years ago,” she said.

“We wanted to recruit new members and we had some interest at the end, so we’re hoping to get them started soon.

“We were able to enjoy what we did and we had a full town hall. We even managed to raise £300 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, as one of our member’s son is due to have an op there soon.

“It was good to link in with them. We were really pleased with how it went; it’s not just children but adults too. We were proud to stand in front of them and say that’s our band.”
