Whitchurch Alport go into tonight's clash at St Helens Town after seeing their automatic promotion hopes dealt a severe blow when Saturday’s match at Carlisle City was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. It was the fifth time in the past six that an away fixture has been called off because of the weather. The club has staged all 19 league games at Yockings Park and the situation left joint manager Luke Goddard not best pleased. “It’s a farcical situation we’re finding ourselves in,” he said. “It doesn’t matter how strong your squad is to cope with the fixture congestion, we’re being asked to play almost a quarter of our league games in 23 days and that’s madness. “We’ve spoken about momentum before and how important it is at this stage of the campaign. “We go and win 7-3 on Monday night (at Daisy Hill) and the lads were right up for the trip to Carlisle. It’s cost us money to get a minibus which we’d sold out to our fans and sometimes you wonder how much these clubs try to get the games on. “We’ve seen the video from Carlisle and so we can’t have any grumbles in regards to the referee’s decision, but a trip there in midweek sandwiched between a number of rearranged games already puts us at a serious disadvantage." *For a full Alport round-up, see this week's Whitchurch Herald.
