SAM HUXLEY has followed his brother Alex from Oswestry to Whitchurch as the Heath Road cricket club continue to strengthen their squad for the new season.

With Alex entering his second season as skipper at Whitchurch, off-spinner Sam has decided to help his brother’s bid to lead the side back into the Birmingham League at the first time of asking.

“Sam will be an important member of the spin attack, having had years of Birmingham League experience with Oswestry CC,” said Whitchurch chairman of cricket Iain Marsh when announcing the signing.

Also joining Whitchurch is Peter Towers from close neighbours Coton Hall.

“Peter will be a valuable member of the second team squad led by Mike Ellis,” said Marsh.

The club’s winter nets are now running at Whitchurch Leisure Centre on Sunday mornings throughout March from 10am to midday with a £3  cost per player. Anyone interested is welcome to go along.

In another development at Whitchurch, James Wojda has taken on the role as head of junior cricket.

The club held a junior management meeting last week, focusing on the 2017 season, and will be entering competitions for boys an girls at under-9, under-10, under-11, under-13 and under-15 level.

There will also be a midweek development team, and youngsters will be given the choice of playing with a hard or soft ball.

Friendly games will be played against Ellesmere  for under-10/11s and under-13s, on dates to be arranged.

“We have a talented coaching staff and structure in place for the 2017 season, and I am very excited about the player and club development which I’m hoping for this summer,” said Wojda.

Registration evening for juniors is on Friday, April 7, and coaching for the season will cost £40 plus £1.50 match fees. This package includes a free T-shirt.

Alternatively, parents can pay £4 a session plus £1.50 match fees.

The first junior coaching evening will be on Thursday, April 20. Food will be served and the bar will be open every week.
