He is not there quite yet, but Nick Powell is certainly showing signs of promise for
Man Utd that he is capable of being able to cut it at the top level, following his impressive display against Galatasaray in the Champions League group stages.
There always appears to be a rush to secure England’s brightest talents and
Man City may feel a little disappointed that they went in pursuit of Scott Sinclair, when they could have had this former Crewe starlet. However, he is still some way off being a first team regular. Tom Cleverly did not instantly force himself into the fold at United when he arrived at Old Trafford.
Also, the result in Istanbul was a 1-0 defeat, so let’s not get carried away as it takes those with a particularly keen eye to glean the positives from the result. Nick Powell is certaintly one of them. At 18 years of age the teenager is still in the developing stages of his career, not in his twenty something’s with his potential well sussed out. He appears to have a physical presence and natural intelligence of the game, which even a so called established player at City such as Sinclair could take note of.
Powell did not look out of place in a United midfield amongst the established Fletcher and Anderson, managing to pull off just as many passes, whilst managing to stick to his task and not go chasing the ball aimlessly. If honed in the right way there is real potential that Manchester United have unearthed one of England’s brightest talents from the Football League. A lot of credit must go to Sir Alex Ferguson for this, with his eagerness to search for players in the lower leagues for his first team squad, whereas City went for the safe option in Sinclair, failing to see beyond the talent of the Premier League. The willingness to find such a player could now deliver huge dividends.
