There was plenty of reminiscing going on at Ellesmere Town Hall as volunteers from the library hosted a special exhibition entitled Down Your Street.

The talk and exhibition told the history of Cross Street, which the volunteers spent months researching. Hosts of the exhibition prepared a slideshow for visitors to see old pictures of the street and how it had changed over the years – or not in some cases, as Fred Roberts at number seven is still open.

The exhibition also saw something for the children, who took part in a treasure trail throughout the town.

Carole Youngs, a speaker at the event, said: “We had an audience of about 100 at our successful Slide Show and Exhibition on Saturday at the Town Hall.

“It started with Chris Jobson telling us about the early history of the street, followed by our volunteers giving the history of each shop, house or trade in Cross Street.

“Many people shared their memories of working or shopping in the street, which made the Slide Show much more interesting. We had many comments from people saying how enjoyable they had found the event, and when is the next one!

“If you didn’t make it on the day, the Slide Show and Exhibition are now at the Library, or have a look in Barlows window for more old photos of the street.”

The exhibition will be at the library for another four to six weeks.
