Emergency services are on the scene in Whitchurch after a car crashed into a property this afternoon.

One person has been cut free by Shropshire firefighters and taken to hospital with their injuries while eyewitnesses reported that armed police were also present after a car – believed to be a blue/silver Citroen Picasso – collided with a hairdressers on the junction of St John's Street and St Mary's Street around 2.25pm.

Four fire crews were sent to the scene from Whitchurch, Prees and Wellington while firefighters used a hose reel jet to clear away debris.

A West Mercia Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 2.19pm today to reports of a car in collision with a shop frontage on St. Marys Street, Whitchurch.

"The driver of the car, a man in his 80s, has been taken to hospital by ambulance.

"A road closure is in place while emergency services are at the scene.

"If anyone witnessed the collision, please call West Mercia Police on 101 quoting incident number 376S of 25 September 2018."
