The MAYOR of Wem has praised those who came out to make sure the town had a party to remember during the annual carnival last weekend.

The town came to a standstill during the party as the parade – which is the highlight of the weekend's activities – passed through the town with some weird and wacky floats on display.

The day started with a 'Freedom Parade' from RAF Shawbury as well as the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the 160th anniversary of the opening of the Crewe to Shrewsbury line.

Councillor Connie Granger, who became mayor of Wem in May, was on hand to perform the duties and she was delighted the weekend was another resounding success.

"All went well over the weekend and I'm so pleased," said Cllr Granger.

"It started with unveiling a plaque on Wem Station to commemorate 160 years of there being a station in Wem.

"From there I moved to the church War Memorial to take a salute from RAF Shawbury to mark their 1000-year anniversary.

"The march was attended by the Station Commander Group Captain Chuck Norris and Alan Scott , who is a Second World War spitfire pilot who is now 97 years old.

"It was a very special event and I felt honoured to be there representing the town.

"Following on from there the carnival was a Great success, floats, dancers and various bands made it a day to remember, well supported by huge crowds and the weather was kind so a great day was had by all.

"I am looking forward to working with my fellow councillors and raising more funds for my two charities, which are Mental Health and Parkinsons disease, and various local causes."

Meanwhile, RAF Shawbury were able to march on their 'Freedom Parade' through the town because of the contribution made to the town of Wem since its founding a century ago.

A statement on Wem Town Council's website before the march said: "On March 24, 2007 Wem Town Council granted Royal Air Force Shawbury the Freedom of Wem.

"This Approbation was in sincere appreciation of the Force’s considerable contribution since 1917 to the community life and economic well-being of Wem and its inhabitants."
