A BEAUTIFUL half-acre piece of garden space in Wem will be opened to the public next week as part of the National Open Garden Scheme.

Sunningdale, which is based at 9 Mill Street, Wem, SY4 5ED, will open on Sunday, September 9 between 11am and 4pm.

The garden, which is owned and maintained by Sue Griffiths, is full of rare and interesting plants and this town garden in the heart of Wem is considered a hidden gem.

Described as a good half-acre town garden, the space is a wildlife haven for squirrels, voles, and a huge variety of birds, including nesting gold crests.

The addition of excellent nectar-rich plants means that butterflies and other pollinators are in abundance.

There are rare plants and many sculptural elements, with lovely borders, productive garden, ponds and waterfalls to enjoy, while there is some wheelchair access.

Access to the garden costs £3 for adults, it is free for children to visit, and there are refreshments as well as home-made teas.

The National Garden Scheme is the most significant charitable funder of nursing charities in the country, donating £55 million so far.

The scheme helps garden owners open their beautiful gardens to the public, sharing their passion and raising impressive amounts of money through entry fees, teas and slices of cake.

Around 3,700 gardens open each year for the National Garden Scheme, and they can be found at www.ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden/garden/33475
