Youngsters in Whitchurch are finally able to enjoy a space for alternative sports after the town's skate park was officially opened last week.

The park, which has arrived as a result of hard work by councillors and Shropshire Council officers, including current Whitchurch town clerk Nicola Young, was officially opened by Whitchurch mayor Councillor Tony Neville, who took a turn on scooter to roll back the years.

He said “I officially cut the ribbon to open the skate park today and Whitchurch Town Council are very pleased that this facility is finally being used.

"The townspeople have been waiting a long time for this skate park and many young people and their families came along today to join in the fun and celebrate with us.”

Ms Young added: “We crossed our fingers with the weather forecast and we were blessed with a dry, sunny day for the skate park opening.

"Thanks to Canvas Spaces, the construction company, who provided some professional skaters to give demonstrations and run competitions on the day. King Ramps were also on site with a pump track, which was free to use for everyone.

"There were many young people of all ages have great fun together, it was great to watch the fun of a skate park integrate all ages.”

Canvas Spaces Ltd ran competitions for boarders and scooter riders and also gave some professional boarding demonstrations. Cllr Tony Neville added: “It is a brilliant facility for young people and what they have wanted for years. It was so good to see everyone enjoying themselves together and long may this last. This is for the young people of our town now and into the future.”
